This trend of players cutting holes in their socks- why?
Seems to be a fair few doing it.

Ventilation? Socks too warm or tight for the poor lambs? Does it serve any actual purpose or is it just ‘trendy’?

Probably something .to do with superstition. Footballers have a rep.for being about as superstitious as you can be. One player probably accidentally ripped his sock recently and played really well in a match....and then his team.won when he wore that ripped sock.

That’s just for the grip socks, when you cut the foot bit of the sock off you then use grip tape to keep it in place. The sock is fine.
The grip socks are so much better

The ones with holes in the socks are doing it to stop cramps as there’s a new thought that the socks are restricting circulation so cutting the holes loosens the the sock around the calf muscle.

They’re cutting the feet off the socks, so they can wear their own anti-slip socks. Then they just use the remainder of the original sock as more of a sleeve over the top of their shin pads. The holes are formed because the integrity of the sock is gone, leading to the thread to loosen & thus creates the holes.
